Concrete is widely regarded as one of the leading contributors to increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere.  Interestingly though, on a per unit basis it is not so bad, it is just that because of its versatility, constructability and durability so much is produced and used that it dwarfs total emission from other less viable products.

According to Cement Concrete Aggregates Australia (CCAA) approximately 29million cubic metres of concrete is produced in Australia each year.

This equates to approximately 70million TONNE of concrete.  At an average CO2 emission rate of 410kg CO2 per cubic metre there is approximately 11.9 million tonnes of CO2 emitted each year during the manufacture of concrete and its component products. Wikipedia

Much work has been done to reduce this impact but much is still to do with each player, from cement manufacturers to engineers to concrete producers to customers and asset owners needing to show proactive leadership so as to ensure the Australian cement and concrete industries can reach their collective emission targets without compromising on the quality, safety and durability of our concrete structures.
